Abstract

This paper discusses Sámuel Brassai’s 1871 essay “After Reading Burns: An Open Letter to Pál Gyulai,” arguing that Brassai's work should be recognised as a critique of the contemporary "popular-national" school of literary interpretation. The paper suggests that Brassai's innovative theoretical stance is closely connected to that of the Acta Comparationis Litterarum Universarum, the Journal founded in 1877 by Brassai and Hugó Meltzl.
