Abstract

In the last decade of the 19th century a traffic count was conducted along the public roads of Borsod County. The traffic of roads shows the spatial distribution of human activities. The average traffic per kilometre in the county was 394 draught animals per day. On average this means 12-13 carts per kilometre in every hour. Road traffic is much more above the average around four settlements (Miskolc, Mezőkövesd, Mezőkeresztes, and Mezőcsát). Cart traffic into Miskolc served local residents’ consumption needs. High road traffic around Mezőkövesd and Mezőkeresztes shows the power of railway in transporting goods, as well as the lack of towns in the microregion. Road traffic was generated primarily by local residents’ everyday necessities and the volume of agricultural production was less important despite our earlier assumptions. Correlation calculations prove that road traffic depended neither on the area of fields nor the density of railways.
