Abstract

A főúri lakóhelyek funkcionális rendszerében jól kifejeződik annak a társadalmi kapcsolati hálónak a szerkezete, amelybe a tulajdonosok háza (udvar- vagy háztartása) beágyazódik. A főnemesi réteg ugyanis olyan tágas, külön saját életvitelt lehetővé tevő mozgástérrel rendelkezett, ahol párhuzamosan a férjnek és a feleségnek külön érintkezési körei lehettek. A társasági terek kialakítása pontosan meghatározott társadalmi jelentéssel bírt, ezek a ház urának és úrnőjének szűkebb érintkezési köre számára voltak fenntartva. The functional system of the noble household reflects the structure of the social relations network well and the owner’s household is embedded in this structure. During the 19th century the nobility was affected by several social changes – as: getting administrative positions, political activities, participation in business corporations, etc.). It resulted in a clear separation of public spaces and privacy, intimate and public functions. The most spectacular manifestation of it is that the public role of private apartments disappeared largely, and this role was taken over by the significantly growing number of social spaces. Namely, the upper nobility had a broad wiggle room which allowed a lifestyle on their own and the husband and the wife could have separate contacting circles, in parallel. However, the etiquette, the convention and the representation obligations required some contacts between the spouses as well, and this socially required minimum of relations could set limits on the lives of both. This determined the publicly legitimized social relationship between the husband and the wife, which is reflected in the meaning of the entity through the generations, namely of the house(hold). The layout, the number and the scope of social spaces, reception areas, guest apartments reflect the way and extent in the integration into the public community by the owners. The formation of social spaces had a well-defined social meaning, those spaces were reserved for the tighter contact circle of the master and the mistress of the house. Here they welcomed those ones who came for a short stay, when the visits did not primarily serve for representation, but rather a comfortable, intimate and ethically more free social life, salon life. On the contrary, the dining room was the symbol of the specific, public, social position which was filled by the owner in the hierarchy of nobility. The dining room could be suitable for the greetings of the nobles with the same or higher rankings during an official visit, and the associated guest apartment could be appropriate to accommodate them. From the 1790s onwards, a differentiated positioning of the linear row of social and integrated collection functions evolved, namely the collections were increased in number and functionally specialized. The differentiated positioning separated the linear row from the residential functions in a much more characteristic way than before. Thus, in the 19th century, social functions appeared completely or partially differentiated from the residential functions, in the majority of the examples the social functions were assigned in the ground floor with a walking availability. In the 1810s, the group of functions which was developed in the linear structure resulted in the need for simultaneous, centralized availability of several social spaces, giving the importance of this traditional structure at that time. The formation of the central, three-tract spatial structures, which encased the large number of social functions in a differentiated way, was typical from the 1850s, while the linear two-tract arrangements were considered as traditional at that time.
