Abstract

One of the fifteen copies of the so-called Pseudo-Cyril Greek-Latin dictionary produced during the 15th and 16th centuries belonged to Janus Pannonius, the most important Hungarian humanist poet. For a long time, it was generally believed that his exemplar (now Suppl. Gr. 45 ÖNB) was also copied by himself, but this view was later convincingly refuted. Since then, it has been alternatively assumed that the dictionary was copied by several scribes (one Latin and two or three Greek copyists). This paper argues that the whole dictionary was written by one and the same person and aims to identify the scribe. I also intend to explore the position this exemplar occupies in the textual tradition and, on the basis of these results, to provide a wider picture of the period when the first steps were made in Hungary to revive Hellenic studies.
