Abstract

COMMUNICATION LEVELS BEERCROFT BUILDING, UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD, UNITED KINGDOM | Architect: HAWKINS BROWN A theoretical and experimental physics research facility require innovative design solutions in terms of a building's functionality and location, especially when set in a world famous historical context. This building functions at many levels, ranging from the secluded basement labs to the open communual workspaces. These workspaces are located purposely at split floor levels to create a conversational atmosphere. The game of togetherness through separation is played out throughout the building's fabric, further referenced in the use of materials: bronze, glass and copper applied in a similar rhythm to its neighbouring buildings. The aim being to follow the current tendency in the UK's educational architecture.
