Abstract

The previously cultivated (alfalfa) Boda mound was abandoned in 2013. Four years long following the abandonment soil samples were collected for monitoring of changes in surface soil characteristics starting in 2014. The samples were grouped according the habitat types: the abandoned surface of the mound, the still cultivated alfalfa in the foreground of the mound, and reference natural vegetation in closest vicinity of the mound. On the three habitat types lists of present species and their cover was registered during the summer 2018. Based on the soil carbonate content there was no significant difference among the habitats. The pH of the alfalfa proved to be significantly lower as on the other two habitats. . The averaged humus content in the control vegetation (8.3±0.6 g/100 g) was significantly (p<0.01) higher, than in the alfalfa (3.9±0.5 g/100 g), and on the abandoned mound (4.8±0.2 g/100 g). There was no significant difference between the humus content of the soils on the abandoned mound and the recently cultivated alfalfa. Based on the nutrient (N, P) content the soil of the mound surface (N: 25.0±3.6 mg/kg; P: 66.5±2.7 mg/kg) and the soil of alfalfa (N: 35.3±3.1 mg/kg; P: 122.5±2.5 mg/kg) showed significant (p<0.01) differences. Based on distribution of the social behavior types of the registered plant species in all habitats the disturbance-tolerant species and the natural weeds dominated. Additionally, on the mound’s surface and in the control vegetation natural competitor and generalist species were present in mentionable share. According the number of present plant species and average cover in fifth year after abandonment the regenerating mound surface (23 species, 91±1% total cover) was closer to the control vegetation (25 species, 93±4%), than to the alfalfa (15 species, 60±10%) which covered the mound surface as well just 5 years ago.
