Abstract

In their study, the authors analyse the spatial structure of Hungary in the long run, including the effects of the Treaty of Trianon. Not only do they investigate this between 1920 and the present, but from an earlier point in time (1870) to show whether the peace agreement had markedly new spatial processes, or had ones previously been observed, slowed down, or accelerated? For this reason, they use census population data from 1870, in accordance with the current administrative spatial divisions. Thus, they make their statements in accordance with today’s settlement and district rankings for ease of interpretation, rather than using previous rankings. The authors first discuss the literary antecedents of the research area and illustrate the processes of spatial structuring of the population on topological maps. Then, using the gravitational method, the characteristic shapes and configurations of the spatial structure are investigated in the territory of the country (parts) affected by pre-Trianon Hungary. In the last part of the study, the consequences that the peace agreement has for the development of territorial differences are examined, and the results are summarised. (Keywords: Hungary, spatial structure, Trianon, models, territorial differences)
