Abstract

The study aims at deciphering the driving forces behind the Hungarian eurolessness from a more complexity-aware perspective. To this end, it applies the concept of runaway phenomena, borrowed from complexity science pervaded by an evolutionary view to the socio-economic innovation ecosystem, in interpreting the runaway Hungarian nationalism. It demonstrates that global runaway phenomena in the world economy have been heavily influencing the Hungarian path. With this approach, it becomes clearer how Hungary turned from eulogy to neutrality and then has gone even beyond in terms of Europeanisation. In such a way, Hungary got too far from the bridge to the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), hence it seems that the governance of the country do not want the parachute EMU can offer. The paper also conveys some lessons both for economics theory and economic governance alike.
