Abstract

| For 1 and 2 dimensional random walks we gave certain strong approximations and investigated the properties of local times under various conditions. We showed that the Komlós-Major-Tusnády approximation theorem can be extended for a large class of dependent processes if in the approximation we allow a second Wiener process with smaller scaling factor. We solved a 60 year old problem of the theory of lacunary sequences by giving an exact number-theoretic condition for the central limit theorem for f(n_kx). We gave a detailed study of a random graph model, among others the chararacteristic exponent of the degree distribution of the vertices if we observe vertices not in the whole graph, but only near an initial vertex. We investigated weighted random graph models and the consistency of the maximum likelihood estimate of the weights. We have dealt with analytic inequalities concerning convex functions, power sums and integrals. We also proved Chebyshev-type inequalities for certain families of multidimensional probability measures. We presented inequalities for central moments, and we gave estimates for the deviation of discrete probability distributions in terms of the sup-distance between their generating functions.
