Abstract

The Stage Curtain as an Emblem in Hungarian Theatre at the End of the 18th Century ----- In the Baroque and Classical periods, a stage curtain vehicles emblematic contents, it is one of the first means of a theatre company to communicate with the public. The description of the curtain of the first Hungarian company has been preserved in the inventory of 1792. In this context, both stage curtains show the theatre as the symbol of modernity, i.e. of new times. The other element is the emphasis on sacredness: supporting the dramatic art is a sacrifice on the altar of the homeland. Ten years later, the issue of constructing a new, representative theatre building in Pest was seriously raised. The following agreement on the iconological programme was concluded on 1810: “on a quadriga drawn by lions and driven by the genius of Virtue, the guardian spirit (genius) of Hungary is displayed taking his way towards the Temple of fine arts. Next to Virtue, Patriotism and Abundance are seated; the latter holds the products of the country in his cornucopia. The chariot is escorted by the geniuses of Bravery, Hospitality, Legal Order, Diligence, Sciences and Happiness. Above the group of statues, floats Eternity, who is kindly received on the steps of the temple by the muse of Acting. In the foreground, next to the genius of Time, the muse of History is seated, who is busy recording the events; at his feet there are children, flowers and wreaths” However, the issues of national identity were also expressed on the curtains: the grand drape of the theatre of Pest presented the identity between the Huns and the Hungarians, thus the glorious national past, but it also displayed the idea that the national culture (and also the theatre) was the pledge of the nation’s future.
