Abstract

A kutatás a késő középkori pestisjárványok korabeli orvosi és vallási értelmezésével, a kétféle értelmezés egymáshoz fűződő viszonyával, illetve e viszony változásaival foglalkozott. Alapját olyan források (pestistraktátusok és prédikációk) képezték, amelyek sok mindenkihez eljuthattak, és kellően részletes értelmezéseket kínáltak. Ezen a tágabb forráscsoporton belül a kutatás öt fő kérdéskörre koncentrált: a pestistraktátusokban megjelenő magyarázatokra, pestistraktátusok kézirathagyományára, a pestisről szóló prédikációkra, a pestisszentekről szóló prédikációkra, továbbá legkorábbi magyar eredetű kéziratban (Aranyasi Gellértfi János kódexében) is fennmaradt pestistraktátusra. A kutatás fő megállapítása az, hogy a 15. században a pestisről szóló, széles körben hozzáférhető orvosi és vallási nézetek ahelyett, hogy egyre távolabb kerültek volna, egyre függetlenebbé váltak volna egymástól (növelve a kétféle értelmezési keret autonómiáját), egyre jobban összefonódtak, egyre nagyobb mértékben áthatották egymást. | The aim of the research was to study the contemporary medical and religious interpretations of medieval plague epidemics, the interrelatedness of the two kinds of interpretation, and the changes in their relationship. It was based on sources (plague tracts and plague sermons) which could reach many and offered sufficiently detailed interpretations. Within this broader group of sources the research focused on five sets of problems: the plague explanations appearing in plague tracts, the manuscript tradition of plague tracts, sermons about the plague, sermons about plague saints, and the earliest plague tract that has also survived in a manuscript of Hungarian origin (in that of János Gellértfi of Aranyas). The main thesis of the research is that widely available medical and religious views of the plague in the 15th century, instead of getting farther and farther, becoming more and more independent of each other (increasing the autonomy of the two frames of interpretation), became in fact more and more intertwined and interpenetrated each other to an ever greater extent.
