Abstract

A ’70-es, ’80-as évek rockzenéje a szakmunkásképző intézményekben tanuló fiatalok révén terjedt el falun. | The aim of the research is the monographic elaboration of the music life of a village from the first half of the 20th century to our days. Research methods included participant observation and ethnographic interviewing. Before WWII the central genre in the repertoire was Magyar nóta [popular art song] which functioned as the musical lingua franca of diverse social strata and inspired the sense of upward mobility and the possibility of drawing closer to urban values in the lower layers. The radio music hits became a popular genre around WWII. It harmonized well and partly merged with Magyar nóta. Later the pop-rock won lots of fans among the young people who studied in vocational schools in the cities. Nowadays the prevalent local social ideology consisting basically of two elements alleviates the economic-social-ethnic conflicts. One of them is the superiority of “locality” or local residence over differences, and the other is the stress on social peace as a basic value. This ideology also implies the acceptance of cultural differences. As regards music, popular music dominates the taste of every group. It is characteristic of nearly the entire secular musical spectrum that “Hungarian” music is preferred, by which everyone understands something else depending on age, interests, and attractions. It is the music of the youth only in which foreign music appears to a greater extent, which connects the local young people to the totality of a wider world in different ways.
