Abstract

One would be hard-pressed to deny the influence Italians have had on the United States of America and on the very fabric of American cultural life. Not only are metropolises like New York City and Chicago with their populations in the millions home to significant Italian communities and neighborhoods but so are cities with several hundred thousand inhabitants like Boston, Baltimore, Syracuse, St. Louis, or Cleveland. The present paper intends to focus on Italians in Cleveland, Ohio, that undoubtedly constitute an organic and significant part of the city’s population. It aims to offer an insight into the formation of the Italian neighborhoods, from the first waves of Italian immigrants in the 19th century, and the opportunities of second-, third-, or nth-generation Italians to tend to their common Italian roots as well as to preserve their customs and traditions from the old country through a wide array of Italian cultural events, the city’s Italian community hubs and memorial sites, or the local Italian-American media. Sarebbe difficile negare l'influenza che gli italiani hanno avuto sugli Stati Uniti d'America e sul tessuto stesso della vita culturale americana. Non solo metropoli come New York City e Chicago con la loro popolazione di milioni di cittadini ospitano comunità e quartieri italiani significativi, ma lo fanno anche città con diverse centinaia di migliaia di abitanti come Boston, Baltimora, Syracuse, St. Louis o Cleveland. Il presente lavoro intende concentrarsi sugli italiani di Cleveland, Ohio, che senza dubbio costituiscono una parte organica e significativa della popolazione della città. Ha lo scopo di offrire una panoramica sulla formazione dei quartieri italiani, dalle prime ondate di immigrati italiani nel 19° secolo, e le opportunità degli italiani di seconda, terza o ennesima generazione di riscoprire le loro comuni radici italiane, di preservare usi e costumi del vecchio paese attraverso una vasta gamma di eventi culturali italiani, i centri della comunità italiana della città e i luoghi della memoria, o i media italo-americani locali.
