Abstract

A két éves posztdoktori kutatás célkitűzése a progresszív aspektus hagyományos szemantikai elemzésének radikális újragondolása volt, elsősorban a Varasdi (2010)-ben kifejtett elképzelésre építve. E munka során sikerült kimutatni, hogy az a hagyományosan elfogadott vélekedés, miszerint a progresszív aspektus szemantikája az események "normális folytatására" támaszkodik, minden intuitív vonzereje ellenére sem tartható, mert nem tud elszámolni az egyre növekvő számú ellenpéldával. A munka másik eredménye egy olyan új formális szemantikai elmélet, amely a normalitás fogalma helyett az esemény kulminációjának szükséges feltételeire épít, és képes kezelni a sztenderd elmélettel szemben felhozott ellenpéldákat. Ez az elmélet mind nyelvészeti, mind filozófiai szempontból jobban megalapozott, mint az előzményéül szolgáló Varasdi (2010), de megőrzi és továbbfejleszti annak előnyös vonásait. Tekintetbe véve a progresszív aspektus problematikájának szoros kapcsolatát nyelvészeti, filozófiai és kognitív tudományi problémákkal, egy a progresszívre vonatkozó új elméletnek nem csak a szűken vett formális aspektológiában, hanem számos egyéb területen is megtermékenyítő hatása lehet. | The goal of this two-year long postdoctoral research was to rethink the traditional semantic analysis of the progressive aspect, primarily on the basis of the theory elaborated in Varasdi (2010). As a result of the research done in this period it has been shown that the received view according to which the semantics of the progressive aspect is based on the ""normal continuation"" of the event is not tenable in spite of its intuitive attractiveness, because it cannot cope with the growing number of counter-examples. Another result of the work done is a new formal semantic theory that is based on the necessary conditions of the culmination of the event instead of normalcy, and is able to handle the counter-examples to the standard theory. The theory is not only better motivated from a linguistic and philosophical point of view than its predecessor in Varasdi (2010), but also preserves and improves upon its favorable features. In view of the close connections between the problems of the progressive aspect and those of theoretical linguistics, philosophy and cognitive science, a new theory of the progressive may not only influence research in formal aspectology in particular, but may have an effect upon numerous other scientific areas as well.
