Abstract

My paper wishes to analyze a religious miscellany which consists exclusively of the copies of Virgin Mary. It was used for devotional practices before 1798 by an unknown Hungarian aristocrat, then preserved along with another 5 compiled books in the Library of the Reformed District in Debrecen (Santa Maria Imagines 182., 1762–1798). My main purpose is to see how these replicas affected on the contemporary viewer, leaving pleasurable traces in the contemporary viewer’s mind. I must take into account the different ways of the dissemination. First of all, I claim that there is a strong bond between God’s contours and language, since the copperplates had spread a visual vocabulary across Europe. The different visual patterns, which were continued to be printed in a considerable size, gave a particular way of seeing. Thus, the matrix of the signs demonstrates the anagogical interpretation of the Christian world (totus mundus). Secondly, I am trying to map out a clear correlation between the prints and Franz Neumayr’s account on the concept of enargeia. The Jesuit educator was an active participant in religious missions in Munich, so he must have regulary encountered with foreign, yet enargetic „things”. It is no coincidence that he expressed his views on imprints on his educational book entitled Idea Rhetoricae. I hold the opinion that this textbook offers a helpful point of orientation to grasp the power of images in the late baroque period
