Abstract

The year of 2021 marked the 58th anniversary of C. de Duve’s coining of the term “autophagy” for the degradation process of cytoplasmic constituents in the lysosome/vacuole (de Duve 1963). Professor János Kovács was 90 and Professor Miklós Sass was 75 in 2021, so that year was important for the Hungarian Science with two pre-eminent scientists being celebrated for their achievements in the field of autophagy. They joined the great discoveries as early as the 60’s of previous century and kept up with the competition until the beginning of this century. They were the first to describe autophagy during the metamorphosis of insects. They were former Heads of Department of Anatomy, Cell and Developmental Biology, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest and established an autophagy research center where a number of significant discoveries were made in the genetic regulation of autophagy.
