Abstract

The phytosociological characteristics and syntaxonomy of the oakhornbeam forests occurring along the Dráva river in Baranya, SW Hungary are presented in this paper. Results of the analyses based on 50 records of the vegetation show that this association {Circaeo-Carpinetum) differs from the oak-hornbeam forests in the Great Plains occurring on pebble, sandy and loess substrates in several aspects. Being more influenced by ground water the habitat is more mesophilic, and, as a consequence, the vegetation is extrazonal with species composition exhibiting similarities to hardwood gallery forests (Alnion inĉanae). Owing to the presence of some species with submediterranean distribution, this association also is related to the oakhornbeam forests (Fraxino pannonicae-Carpinetum) on sand in Inner Somogy of Hungary.
