Abstract

The present paper studies the motivations behind the naming practices and tries to uncover the connection between the first name giving and the national identities of parents. This paper is based on the results of a questionnaire carried out in Csanálos (a little village in the west part of Romania, near the Hungarian border, the village is dominantly inhabited by Hungarians). The paper summarizes the history of the community, because the root of common origin of the community is still present. Additionally the paper studies first names given between 1965–1989 and 1990–2013. It presents the name giving practices and naming fashions of these two generations. According to the results of the questionnaire it turns out that parents often choose names for their children based on different aesthetic aspects. The majority of the informants consider that the pleasant sounding of the name is more important than the origin or the meaning of the name. The author points out that the practices of name choice and the motivations behind them are quite similar to those of Hungarians living in the home country.
