Abstract

One of the most cited nations of contemporary architectural culture is Spain that implies designers widely acknowledged on international forums. The country that suffered strains in the Civil War between the two World Wars and lived under dictatorship for decades started to develop increasingly after joining the European Union in 1986. The construction boom consummating in the 90's was not confined to the capital which was previously improved due to the centralization but it was observable in the peripheries as well where significant investments were built. New buildings came into existence related to almost all fields of economy. There are high-quality buildings representing contemporary Spanish culture among family houses of the private sphere, among investments of the service sector and among cultural developments of the government alike. However, their synopsis is not based on typology or on architectural stylish references but it analyses the adaption of architecture to natural endowments of the Iberian Peninsula as a characteristic geographical unit, emphasizing the diversity of contemporary Spanish architecture developing from the bases of modernism that rightly earned the international recognition.
