Abstract

A natNi foil was use for the production of 64Cu via 64Ni(p,n)64Cu nuclear reaction due to the high price of the enriched 64Ni. The produced 64Cu radioisotope was separated by ion exchange method using more fine resin (200-400 mesh), more bed volume (15 mL), more slow elution (0,5 mLmin-1) than usual and with fitted HCl concentration (5molL-1). The contaminating 57Ni and 55Co, detected in the irradiated natNi were completely separated from 64Cu by this chemical process. The final product of 64Cu was 32.2 + 1.8 MBq in quality with “no carrier added”. The radionuclide contamination was less than the minimum detectable activity (MDA), 0.013 + 0.012 MBq for 55Co and 0.004 + 0.002 MBq for 57Ni and only 0.052+0.002 MBq, 0.16% of 61Cu was in 64Cu. The last step of the method was the reduction of Fe(III) concentration to 1.7 ppm by precipitation of Fe(OH)3 and its filtering from Ammonium hydroxide media keeping the copper ions in amine-complex form. This activity of 64Cu radionuclide and chemical purity can fulfill the requirement for small animal PET imaging. Moreover the necessary investment for target material (350 mg) is 50 times less using the natNi instead of 64Ni.
