Abstract

| The main goal of our research was to study the oribatid fauna of the Carpathian Basin (naturally including the Hungarian fauna as well). Moreover we aimed also to explore the hardly known tropical fauna (Ethiop, Oriental, Neotropical), and furthermore elucidate their distributional and taxonomic relationships. Taxonomic (faunistic) results: According to the geographical regions: we published and described 272 new occurrence data and 20 species new to science from Europe, 62 new occurrence data, 40 new species and 3 genera new to science from the Ethiop Region, 35 new occurrence data, 31 species and 4 genera new to science from the Oriental Region and 4 new occurrence data, 12 species and 1 subgenus new the science from the Neotropical Region. Zoogeographical and faunagenetical results: We have published several new proofs of the Pleistocene change and the subsequent Holocene development of the Transylvanian fauna. We were able to prove the connection between the oribatid fauna of Sokotra Island and East-Africa furthermore the relationships of the South Asian (Oriental) fauna. On the basis of redescriptions and taxonomic revisions we were able to clarify the relationships in several suprageneric taxa and prepared identification keys for many genera. A comprehensive Monograph on the oribatid mites of the Ethiop region is in preparation. In this work we are publishing all the databases, check-lists and reference-lists compiled during this study.
