Abstract
The paper deals with the complex structural optimization of steel structures subjected to seismic loading. The developed algorithm adopts state-of-the-art design and analysis tools with respect to the seismic performance assessment and to the optimization methods. The performance assessment is based on complex and comprehensive reliability analysis directly incorporating the uncertainties of the seismic effects and the response of the structure. Due to the large number of variables and the high nonlinearity of the problem, genetic algorithm is invoked for the optimization. The developed algorithm is applied for low-rise steel frame industrial hall structures. Based on parametric study, influence of various components on the optimal solution are quantified, and conclusions on optimal design are drawn.
