Abstract

Within current business trends, companies have one overwhelming need: to increase the speed and efficiency of the flow of materials. However, disruptions can disturb smooth operations, causing delays or necessitating adaptation to change. Therefore, disruptions can lead to adverse consequences on companies’ delivery performance that can ripple to firms in the downstream supply chain. Global supply chains have become increasingly vulnerable to these disruptions, so a better understanding of the effects and benefits of risk management is critical. The purpose of this paper is to empirically analyse how the relationship between time-based strategic goals and delivery performance is affected by the management of supply chain disruptions. The results reveal that there is a positive relationship between time-based strategy and delivery performance, and the relationship is partially mediated by supply chain risk management (SCRM). In other words, firms that use time-based strategies are more likely to put efforts into SCRM, and by doing so, they show superior delivery performance. Thus, SCRM pays off in terms of better delivery performance. The analysis is based on data from the sixth edition of the International Manufacturing Strategy Survey, and SEM-PLS is used for modelling.
