Abstract

Welded steel frame is one of the most widely used traditional civil engineering structure, but its economical design, fabrication and erection is still an important topic. FEM based design of steel structures is an efficient tool to develop and design more economical welded frames. In the frame of an R&D project at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics an intensive research activity is carried out to develop and design optimized welded steel frames. The aim of the project is to develop new structural details and relevant advanced design methods which give economic and optimal solutions considering static loads, fire and earthquake actions and fabrication requirements at the same time. The structural behavior of the complex building structure is studied from the welding process, through the joint and structural member to the whole building system. The paper presents the applicability and advantages of the FEM based design method for complex frame structures under various actions and introduces new or enhanced design methods.
