Abstract

In the paper, the author revises Joel Relihan’s statement that the Martianus’s work De nuptiisPhilologiae et Mercurii is an instance of Menippean satire genre. On the basis of an analysis of the use of verse passages on typical situations (topoi), she excludes the text from the group of Menippean satires. Inspiration by Menippean satire is undeniable; however, Martianus employed characteristic features of this particular genre for didactic reasons.
