Abstract

The language situation in Belarus is extremely complex. Although the majority of the population of the republic regard Belarusian language as their mother tongue, they do not use it. UNESCO classifies Belarusian as a vulnerable language. There are several reasons for identifying the endangerment: two official languages in the country (Russian and Belarusian); two varieties of orthography, grammar and language standards (official and taraškievica) ; the widespread use of trasyanka (everyday language) ; the existence of several regional dialects. Can Belarus language be saved and if so, whose task is it? What roles should be played in saving the language by the state, the Belarusian intelligentsia, representatives of the culture, young people, and, strange as it may seem, foreigners? What does it mean to be Belarusian?
