Abstract

The author provides a critical analysis of the new etymology of the place name Verderevŭ: as if from *Vĭrxŭ Derevo (as proposed by V. Shul’gach). A complex approach including the historical, the linguistic, and the geographical aspects of discussion allows to prove that the adjective Vĭrxŭderevĭskyi, on which this etymology is based, is a later transformation due to folk etymology. In the second part of the paper, the author substantiates the etymology of the Russian river name Čagodošča, explaining it as transformed by metathesis from Čadogošča < *Čędogost-jь, first proposed by A. Popov but rejected by later researchers.
