Additional Information: The French Foreign Office image of Central and Eastern Europe after 1956 According a note on the Soviet bloc of December 1964 from the Eastern Europe desk of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, "The idea of a monolitic bloc now belongs to the past". The image of a region with uniform countries to which Sovietization had given birth between 1945 and 1949 was gradually changing. Examining this process from 1955 to 1964, a pivotal period with a thaw in East-West relations, this article shows how Quai d'Orsay's image of central and eastern Europe was formed. To outline the process whereby French diplomacy created "new knowledge; on this region, focus is placed on how the diplomats there gathered, analysed and transmitted information to headquarters, where the information was interpreted. The principal aspect of the image thus formed about central and eastern Europe are pointed out along with the changes in it.
