Abstract

In the Kisalföld Region (Hungary) Thysanoptera larvae were collected from alfalfa flowers (Medicago sativa) every two weeks. After extraction with Berlese-funnels the second stage larvae were identified to investigate the abundance and significance of these larvae The most abundant species in 2009 (831 larvae) and 2010 (759 larvae) were Odontothrips confusus (36.7%, 35.2%), Thrips tabaci (28.7%, 31%) and Frankliniella intonsa (22.1%, 22.9%). From these results it is clear these species not only feed, but reproduce also on alfalfa. Larvae of Aeolothrips intermedius were present in the samples in about 9%. On alfalfa they predate probably mainly on larvae of the pest species O. confusus and T. tabaci. Based on their numbers, A. intermedius plays probably an important regulating role in the agrobiocenosis of alfalfa. Larvae of Thrips angusticeps were found in 3,4% or less of the alfalfa thrips population.
