Abstract

This paper provides an updated list of blue-green algae/cyanobacteria inhabiting the different geographical / water habitats in Egypt. It includes 43 reference works dealing entirely or partly with blue-green algae. The list revealed a current knowledge of 290 taxa, belonging to 51 genera of 9 families and 4 orders. All taxa are cosmopolitan. The main elements of the flora is belonging to family Oscillatoriaceae and in particular, sixty-one species and varities of genus Oscillatoria were recorded. The analysis of the reference works showed that, biotopes of some geographical localities (Nile Delta, Nile Valley, Southern Sinai) were received cursory attention for intensive algological studies in comparing with biotopes in another localities (Isthmic Desert, Cairo, Mareotic sector). In conclusion, good floristic surveys aided with expertise in identification together with modern identification keys is recommendable for retrieving good taxonomic papers.
