Abstract

Since criticism has only known about the existence of Čakavian texts from the seaside area before the 17th century, the Kajkavian dramatised planctus written in 1626 that was found in 1997 in Csíksomlyó/Şumuleu, Romania counts as a text of unique value in old Croatian literature. In this essay, we will place our Kajkavian planctus among related Croatian texts and also compare it with the so-called Picić-text which it stands closest to in detail. In addition, we will mention the possible Hungarian connections, too. We will also attempt to identify the author who signs the text as Andreaß Kneßajich. We think that he is identical with the Franciscan friar, András Zágrábi studying in Gyöngyös, who, among others, was sent to Csíksomlyó due to the order of Péter Pázmány. Finally, to illustrate the Slavic intellectual background of our text, we will briefly describe the Transylvanian activi-ties of the Bosnian Franciscans.
