Abstract

Lucas Habina, the Professor of Rusyn Seminarists in Eger (North Hungary) – As Owner of the First Book of Suprasľ Basilians’ Typography in Suprasľ The union in Uzhgorod in 1646 gave opportunities for the Carpathian Greek Catholic, Rusyn clergy for the access to education and acquiring the European culture. Lucas Habina, the professor of the Church Slavonic and Byzantine Liturgy in Eger, was the dean of the Greek Catholic district of Humenne before, then he got into sharp debates with bishop Olshavsky and his successor Bradach, too, as the latter arrested him. Habina had to escape and ran to Eger, when bishop Eszterházy appointed him for a teacher of the Rusyn seminarists were educated in Eger. The inventory of Habina’s heritage, written in 1775, contained 82 books, among them 16 items in Church Slavonic. Of great significance was the Liturgicon (Sluzhebnik), printed in Suprasľ in 1695. The typography of Suprasľ (now in Poland) was not only a productive printing institution but a cultural centre, too, since the turn of 17/18 cc, when the Basilians moved from Vilnius (then Wilno) to Suprasľ. The first book (a Liturgicon) had begun to be printed in Vilnius in 1692 which were shown on the title page, then its body were made in Suprasľ, 1695, according to the colophon. The whole method of editing made this book to be an excellent Catholic, but Byzantine manual of the service. While the Liturgicon 1692 95 contained some etchings depicted the Heart of Jesus and other Catholic symbols, the same engravings were for the second edition printed in Unev, 1740 (҂AѰМ), but all these Western symbols were removed.
