Abstract

The rulers of the Neapolitan branch of the Angevin dynasty elaborated a particular administrative system for the government of the countries and provinces that came under their rule at different times. The system was based on the regular circulation of government agents across the various countries and provinces. Thus, the Angevin office-holders came to constitute a kind of inter- and supranational governing body. In Angevin Hungary, however, this form of government failed to be implanted. No great number of foreign fortune-hunters came to Hungary, and few of those who did managed to rise to prominence there. The dynasty’s aim in Hungary was not separation but assimilation, through adaptation to the local traditions.
