Abstract

Since we started our work in the region of the Transdanubian Mountains 122 Mesostigmatid mite species have been found. In the present study we list new occurrences of 76 species. There are two main goals of the study - To give a short description in Hungarian on how to collect, prepare and study mites. - To present new scientific results on the investigation of the Mesostigmatid mites of the Transdanubian Mountains. Altogether we found 45 Uropodina, 1 Sejina, 75 Gamasina and 1 Antennophorina species in the region. New occurrences of 76 species include 9 first records for Hungary, while 47 species of the 122 species collected were published earlier as “first records" in several other papers. Most of the species were collected in the regions of Bakony (46), Vértes (42) and Gerecse (32), 23 species in the Budai Hills, 13 species in the Visegrádi Mts, 9 species in the Pilis, and 11 species in the Velencei Hills. Several species with an interesting distribution were found in the region. T. comata has tropical relatives, all the species of the genus occur only in the tropics. T. comata species can be found only in anthills in Europe. Z. kontschani were described from the Mts Papuk in Northern Croatia, the new occurrence of this species is remarkable. N. pulcherrima can be found in several parts of the Carpathian Basin, but we collected only at one small part in the Transdanubian Mountains. Most of the species found live in leaf litter, soil and moss. We found several species in nests (that of birds, mammals, and ants), in bat guano, compost, in decaying trees and reeds. Several special and rare mite species can be found in these habitats.
