Abstract

Ego-resiliency is a dynamic capacity which systematically modifies control for optimizing the personality system with regards to the environmental context. The goal of this research was to identify components of ER, test structural, convergent and predictive validity, and reliability of the refined version of the Ego-resiliency scale, named ER11. In Study 1 we used the factor analytical approach to assess structural validity and identify facets of ER. Based on Block and Block’s theory and comparing ten alternative factor-structures, a nested factor model was chosen including three factors: Active Engagement with the World, Repertoire of Problem Solving Strategies, and Integrated Performance Under Stress. In Study 2, the convergent and divergent validity of the ER11 and its factors were tested. The results suggest that the ER11 is very similar to the original ER89 scale, but differs regarding the affective regulatory aspects from other alternative scales, such as CD-RISC. Furthermore, results showed that these components differ in their relationships pattern in a systematic (and theory-driven) way. In Study 3 we tested the ER11 in a Hungarian online representative sample. Finally, a model of general resiliency is proposed by reinterpreting the theory of ego-resiliency and resilience, in which adaptive utility beyond stressful or traumatic situations is emphasized.
