Abstract

| The aim of the proposal was to study the physical properties of non-conventional magnetic systems. We employed multi-frequency electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy as the principal experimental technique. We also modeled the systems: we set up their microscopic and/or effective Hamiltonians in order to be tested against experiments and to determine their parameters. The systems that we investigated can be classified into the following three types: (i) magnetic nanoparticles and their limiting case, the molecular magnets, (ii) low dimensional and frustrated magnets, and (iii) systems in which the spins also interact with other degrees of freedom. The focus was on the investigation of the magnetic properties of low-dimensional organic charge transfer salts (some of these samples were synthesized in our own laboratory), and of the ferromagnet/superconductor hybrid thin layer nanostractures. The proposed research was fundamental even if it was also motivated by the potential applications (high density information storage, microscopic sensors etc.) of similar systems, and this is what made and makes it timely.
