Abstract

The present paper takes as its starting point the context of the guest performances from the document „I can only give an account of my guest performances in the countryside from 1868 onwards” by the iconic Hungarian actress Kornélia Prielle. The catalogue records 784 performance occasions in sixty-six settlements of historical Hungary, and can also be seen as a source of the life and strategies of provincial travelling companies of the period. The analysis does not simplify the functioning of provincial travelling companies by explaining the direct correlation between the levels of the provincial theatre station system of the period and the locations of the guest performances. It also looks at aspects such as relationships with theatre directors, the composition of companies, repertoire and style of performance, personal connections, social and family relations, adherence to socially expected norms of behaviour, and the context of charity and supportive practices, the maintenance of artistic reputation and social prestige, and the community-driving power of non-theatrical objectives that can be used to represent fame, as well as personal talents and sensibilities, which also reveal the more subtle mechanisms that have brought a guest performance into being.
