Abstract

The monastery of Unterranna (Lower Austria) was founded in 1414 by Johann of Neydeck and subordinated to the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit. When it was dissolved in 1783 during the Josephine reforms, parts of its library were transported to the Benedictine monastery of Göttweig, where they are preserved today. This group of 31 codices is of special interest for the humanities in Hungary since the Pauline Brothers and their books form an important part of Hungarian cultural heritage of which many items during several wars and the Reformation had been destroyed. As a start, the following article gives an introduction to the history of the Pauline Brothers and their spiritual traditions. In addition to that the code of practice of annual visitations is described as well as the geographic impact of Pauline filiations and their manuscript tradition. By and by various examples from Ranna codices are given and help to illustrate the impact of manuscripts on monastic life. A list of shelfmarks of Ranna codices today in Göttweig is added as an appendix at the end of the article.
