Abstract
In day-ahead electricity markets large numbers of supply and demand bids are submitted, the acceptance or rejection of which must be decided subject to various restrictions. These restrictions, originating from technological considerations and implying integer type variables, make the computations of the underlying optimization problem time-consuming. In this work we propose a two step alternative clearing method. In the first step, using the aggregation of bids, an approximate clearing is performed, and based on the outcome of this clearing, the clearing prices of periods are estimated. These assumptions regarding the intervals of clearing prices explicitly determine some bid acceptance indicators. In the second step, we decompose the remaining aggregated bids and determine the final clearing result. The appropriateness of the final outcome of the proposed method depends on the aggregation pattern of bids in the first step.
