Abstract

| Within the period of the grant funding, in cooperation with my colleagues, we have developed molecular diagnostic methods for the detection of the West Nile virus, the Usutu virus, six different viruses of the honeybee, the Tahyna virus, a porcine reovirus, the avian nephritis virus, the duck hepatitis virus, the PRRS virus, the hepatitis E virus, and several other animal viruses. With the help of these methods, viruses were detected in diagnostic samples with Hungarian and foreign origin. The partial or complete genome sequences of the detected virus strains were determined; phylogenetic analyses and epidemiological investigations were made. We have detected for the first time West Nile virus strains in Hungarian goose, wild bird, sheep and horse encephalitic cases; Usutu virus in Hungarian, Swiss and Italian dead wild bird samples, certain bee viruses in Hungarian and Austrian apiaries, and hepatitis E virus in Hungarian swine and game samples. Our investigations gave insights into the genetic diversity and relationships of the investigated genotypes; and sometimes the probable origins of the strains were also identified. The newly developed diagnostic techniques facilitated the rapid and reliable diagnosis of viral diseases.
