Abstract
Abstract The sinteringprocessofceramiccompositesisknowntosignificantly alterthedistributionofthenanoscale fillers withinthematrix.Graphene nanoplatelets reinforcedceramiccompositessinteredunderuniaxialpressureconditions(e.g.,sparkplasmasintering,hotpressing)display anisotropic mechanical,electricalandthermalproperties.Thisanisotropycanbeattributedtothepreferentialalignmentofthegraphene nanoplatelets perpendiculartothedirectionoftheuniaxialpressure.Here,weprovideadetailedstructuralcharacterizationofthegraphene nanoplatelet distributionbyscanningelectronmicroscopyandultra-smallangleneutronsscatteringinvestigationsofsparkplasmasinteredSi3N4/ graphene nanoplateltscomposites.Toquantifytheeffect,wecompareour findings forsamplessinteredbythesparkplasmasinteringwith uniaxial pressure(SPS)tothesamecompositesinteredbyhotisostaticpressingemployingisotropicpressure(HIP).WefoundthatforSPS sintered compositesmorethan80%ofthegraphenenanoplatelets(GNPs)areorientedwithin 7151 of thedominantorientationdirection,in striking contrasttotherandomlyorientatedGNPsfoundinthesamplessinteredbyHIP.Theseresultscancontributetothequantitative understanding ofthevariousanisotropicphysicalpropertiesreportedinGNPreinforcedcompositespreparedbymethodsemployinguniaxial pressure. & 2015 ElsevierLtdandTechnaGroupS.r.l.Allrightsreserved.
