Abstract

The article presents and examines excerpts from some of the lesser -known autobiographical notes and reminiscences of the renowned painter, Leonid Pasternak (1862 - 1945), father of the writer Boris Pasternak. One of his childhood memories describes the 1871 pogrom in his native Odessa. This short, dramatic piece, written sixty years after the event, in exile, along with other writings referring to his Jewish roots, have been marginalized or simply omitted from his published Memoirs. This paper makes an attemp t to put such omissions and silence – of his own, and of others’ – about the Jewish origin in the wider context of the artist’s oeuvre.
