Abstract

The biology of Angoumois moth, Sitotroga cerealella (Oliv.) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), was studied on maize varieties, viz. Neelum (Yellow), Sadaf (white), Agaiti-85 (Yellow) and Pak Afgyous (White), four hybrid varieties, 32B33 Hyb (Yellow), 8711 Hyb (Yellow), 8288 Hyb (Yellow) and 33W86 Hyb (Yellow) and two basic lines, EV-5098 (Yellow) and EV-6098 (White) in choice and no choice bioassays. The biological parameters such as development time, moth emergence and grain damage were correlated with phenolics, flavonoids and tannic acid in these varieties. Results showed that moth took longer time to develop and less moth emergence and grain damage on 8711 Hyb and 32W86 Hyb and closely followed by Agaiti-85 and Pak Afgyous. There was non-significant difference in fecudity and adult moth weight with respect to varieities in two assays. Egg hatching was non-significant in two assays but varieties were significantly different in this respect. Maximum egg hatching was observed on 8288 Hyb that was significantly different from other varieties. The significantly different minimum hatching in variety 8711 Hyb had non-significant difference with Agaiti-85, EV-5098 and Sadaf. The maximum total phenolics (2.16 gallic acid equivalents g−1 dry matter) in 32B33 Hyb had significant difference with all other varieties. 8288 Hyb, EV-5098 and 8711 Hyb having minimum total phenolics (0.86, 0.91 and 0.95, respectively) had non-significant difference among themselves. The maximum total flavonoids (0.32) were present in variety 32W86 Hyb. Minimum total flavonoids (0.04) were found in EV-5098 (0.04) being non-significantly different from Agaiti-85 (0.08). The minimum amount of tannic acid (0.6) was noted in varieties 32B33 Hyb and Pak Afgyous. In Neelum, the tannic acid was maximum (0.68) and had non-significant difference with Pak Afgyous, 32W86 Hyb and 32B33 Hyb.The correlation between phenolics and biological parameters revealed the association between them and is discussed with respect to future studies.
