Abstract

Coughing presents a sudden expulsion of air accompanied by a typical sound. This sound in healthy subjects consists from one or two burst. Extra sound burst indicate cough in pathological condition. Previously we evaluated cough sounds only visually, what was not precise. Therefore the aim of this study was to objectify the evaluation of cough sound bursts. We analysed the cough sounds of 105 subjects (45 healthy volun teers, 35 asthmatics, 25 bronchitics). The spectrum of cough sound was obtained by Fast Fourier Transform. Self -developed algorithm was used for the further calculation. The sound intensity approximated by total spectral power was expressed in the appropri ate window. The analysed window was shifted through the sound record with the step of 10 samples. The local maxima of cough sound intensity were stated on the basis of the shape of total spectral power curve. Single cough sound record contains only one loc al maximum, double sounds two and multiple sounds more than two.We found no relationship between single and double cough sounds and pathological conditions, unlike multiple, which had a clear pathological origin. We suppose that the occurrence of mono or double sound is a healthy phenomenon. The double cough sound can change to single cough sound after 3 –5 double sound cough efforts. We suppose, that the presence only of single sound is due to exhausted muscles of glottis or that it has a pathological orig in. The initial appearance of single sounds can later lead to appearance of double sounds. There are subjects who cough with both double and single sounds, and others who cough with only one pattern.
