Abstract

Two new species of the genus Hoffmannia appeared in the collections of SERBO de Oaxaca and in that of the Facultad de Ciencias de la UNAM, respectively. Hoffmannia arachnipoda Borhidi et S. Salas-Morales is a unique species among the Mexican representatives of the genus with its very loose and large inflorescence and small flowers. Similar species were described from Panama: Hoffmannia capillacea Dwyer differs by having glabrous stems and leaves and inflorescences with short peduncles, hypanthium much longer and acute calyx lobes. Hoffmannia araneipedaria Dwyer differs with its glabrous stems, large sessile leaves, inflorescences partly cauliflorous, triangular calyx lobes and oblong fruit. Hoffmannia hidalgensis Borhidi is near to H. orizabensis Standl. which differs from our species by its shrubby shape, cylindrical rufo-villous venation of the leaves, rufo-villous inflorescences and much larger flowers. Both species are regarded as endemics of the Mexican flora.
