Abstract

AE monitoring on Vesuvius enables to recognize that the system seems to be supplied by a phreatic, rather than by a plutonic, process. Moreover, it is possible to distinguish, with a high temporal resolution, periods of time during which Vesuvius seems to be “inflating” and others during which it appears to be “deflating”. Correlation with seismic evidence is discussed, and it is shown that during “inflation” the standard seismic records loose ~99% of the accumulated potential energy.
