Abstract
In the Kingdom of Hungary, the Reformed Church established a multilevel church governance system. The church organisation was based on congregations. Congregations were grouped into dioceses, which supervised the proper operation of the congregations. Above the dioceses there were the church districts led by superintendents. The study presents the operation of a diocese in the south-east region of the Kingdom of Hungary. We rely on historical sources as we present how the diocese was reorganised by 1731. This is followed by an analysis of the effectiveness of the diocese’s operation. Finally, we describe what happened after the Patent of Toleration, when significant changes took place in the governance of the diocese: new congregations were established, canonical visitations became regular and the system of general superintendents was established.
