Abstract
The study of the Toraja traditional house or Tongkonan in Indonesia aims to discover a better understanding of how a home serves as a container for human activities. The process of construction, from selection of materials and the cultural importance of forest estate management, through to methods of implementation and continuous social impact. Each stage being celebrated by the community to strengthen a sense of kinship. Recently some of these homes have been modernised, using for example sheet metal covering, which does increase the life span of a building at the cost of depreciating cultural and touristic value. This study aims to help the community retain value in terms of architectural and social heritage.
