Abstract

Modern buildings in RIBE are a rare occurrence, therefore the risk of succumbing to pastiche must be avoided. How does a new building retain the quality of materials, form, surfaces and space required in a historic city? Traditional methods have been applied in terms of materials used, coarse timber planks, handmade bricks and sloppy shuttered concrete: all point possibly to a time in the history, yet are manifested in a contemporary building form. The priority being material honesty that helps regenerate the area around the cathedral.
