Abstract
One of Hungary's largest, yet not well known, castle ruins can be found in Szögliget. Reaching this location was seen as problematic, as recipient of the 2021 ICOMOS award for conservation, it is apparent that making monuments relatively easy to access is a key to responsible development. Well concieved timber stairways and observation decks allow visitors to gain an understanding of the castles earlier scale, without the need to rebuild anything. Ruins tell their own story without the need to seek glory or self congratulaions. Conservation is more an act of freezing decay to the existing fabric and informing visitors about previous ways of life.
